2 TimothyChapter 1
2 Timothy Chapter 1: Meaning
Paul writes to encourage Timothy to be bold and not ashamed of the gospel, even when things get hard.
Summary
Paul opens this letter by telling Timothy how much he cares about him. He prays for Timothy night and day and longs to see him again. He thinks about Timothy's faith, a faith that was first alive in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice, and now lives in Timothy too.
Paul then urges Timothy to stir up the gift God gave him. He reminds him that God did not give us a spirit of fear. God gave us a spirit of power, love, and self-control. So Timothy does not need to be ashamed of talking about Jesus or of Paul being in prison for the gospel. Instead, he should be willing to suffer for the good news, relying on God's strength.
Paul talks about his own situation. He is in prison, but he is not embarrassed. He knows who he has trusted, and he is sure that God will keep safe what Paul has placed in his care. He tells Timothy to hold on to the truth he learned and to protect it with help from the Holy Spirit. The chapter ends with Paul mentioning that some people deserted him, but one faithful man named Onesiphorus came all the way to Rome to find him and encourage him.
Historical Context
Paul wrote this letter around 67 AD from a Roman prison. He expected to be executed soon. This was his last letter before he died. He was writing to encourage his young friend and partner Timothy.
Timothy sometimes struggled with fear and shyness. Paul knew this, so he wrote to remind him to be brave and to keep going. The letter is full of personal warmth. It reads like a father saying goodbye and passing the torch to his son.
