3 MaccabeesChapter 4

3 Maccabees Chapter 4: Meaning

Jews across Egypt are rounded up and shipped to a racetrack to be killed, but God quietly stops the count.

Summary
When the king's letter arrived in cities across Egypt, many people celebrated. They had always disliked the Jews and were happy to see them suffering. The Jewish people were devastated. Every street was filled with mourning and tears. Soldiers rounded up Jews from everywhere, old men, young women on their wedding day, new mothers, and husbands in the prime of life. They were chained up, loaded onto ships, and sent to a large racetrack called the hippodrome outside the city of Alexandria. There they would be held until the king was ready to kill them all. The king celebrated with banquets and idol worship while Jews sat in chains. He ordered that every single Jew in Egypt be counted and put on a list for execution. Officials worked from sunrise to sunset for forty days but could not finish, there were just too many people. When the king was told this, he accused the officials of taking bribes. But they proved they had run out of paper and ink before they could complete the list. The author says this was no accident, it was God stepping in to protect his people.

Historical Context

This chapter is set in Egypt around 217 BC. The hippodrome was a large outdoor stadium used for horse and chariot races. It was a public place, easy for everyone to see, which is why the king chose it to humiliate the Jews before killing them.

The attempt to register an entire ethnic group for destruction is one of the darkest ideas in this story. The fact that the plan was stopped by something as simple as running out of paper shows how the author viewed God's hand in history, sometimes God works through very ordinary things to protect people from great evil.

What This Means Today

When life feels out of control, God is still working behind the scenes to protect us.
Cruelty toward innocent people is always wrong, no matter how powerful the person doing it.
Even people who don't know us can feel moved with compassion — kindness can show up in unexpected places.
God can use something as small as running out of paper to stop great evil.
Dark and painful times don't mean God has forgotten us.
