3 MaccabeesChapter 5
3 Maccabees Chapter 5: Meaning
The king plans to crush the Jews with drunk elephants three times, but God makes him forget each time.
Summary
The king ordered his elephant keeper, Hermon, to get five hundred elephants drunk on wine and frankincense. The plan was to drive them into the crowd of Jewish prisoners the next morning and crush everyone to death. The prisoners were chained and terrified. They prayed all night to God for rescue.
The first morning came, but God put the king into a deep sleep. He slept so long that by the time he woke up, mealtime was almost over. He had completely forgotten about the elephants. The Jews praised God for being saved and prayed again for continued protection.
The king called for Hermon that evening and was angry that the Jews had not been killed. He ordered the same plan for the next day. Once again, God caused the king to forget everything. When Hermon came to announce the elephants were ready, the king had no idea what he was talking about. He even threatened Hermon for bringing the elephants out.
This happened a third time. The king's friends and family were confused and frustrated. The king swore an angry oath and planned a third attempt. He even talked about destroying the temple in Jerusalem. The elephants were made drunk again, and this time the whole city gathered to watch. The Jewish prisoners, fearing they were about to die, held each other tightly and cried out to God one last time.
Historical Context
This chapter is set in Alexandria, Egypt, around 217 BC, near the hippodrome where the Jewish prisoners were being held. Elephants were sometimes used in ancient warfare to terrify and trample enemies. Using them to execute prisoners was an extreme and unusual act of cruelty.
The king's repeated forgetting is presented as a miracle from God. Three failed attempts show that God was actively blocking the king's plan. This would have been a very encouraging story for Jewish readers who were facing their own times of danger and uncertainty under foreign rulers.

Persistent prayer matters — the Jews prayed all night and kept calling out to God.
God's power is far greater than any army, weapon, or plan of man.
Even when danger feels very close, we can still cry out to God and trust him to act.
People who keep trying to do evil may find their own plans turning against them.
