Amos Chapter 3: Meaning

God explains why He must punish Israel and warns that destruction is coming to Samaria's strongholds.

Summary
God starts this chapter by reminding Israel that He chose them out of all the families on earth. But that special relationship does not protect them from punishment, it actually makes them more responsible. Because God has been so close to them, their disobedience is much more serious. Amos then asks a series of simple questions to make a point. Do two people walk together unless they agreed to meet? Does a lion roar when it has caught nothing? Does a trap spring up from the ground by itself? The answer to all of these is no. In the same way, when God warns through a prophet, there is a real reason for it. God does not speak without purpose. God then calls the neighboring nations to come look at Israel's sin. The people of Samaria, Israel's capital city, were storing up things they had taken from others. God says His punishment is coming. The altars at Bethel will be broken. The fancy houses built of cut stone and the big mansions with ivory decorations will all be torn down.

Historical Context

Amos was preaching in Israel around 760 BC. The people of Israel thought that because God had chosen them, He would always protect them. Amos challenged that idea. Being chosen by God does not mean you can do whatever you want, it means you are held to a higher standard.

Samaria was the capital city of the northern kingdom of Israel. Archaeological digs have found expensive ivory carvings there, which matches what Amos described. The people were living in luxury while ignoring God's commands to treat others fairly.
