HoseaChapter 7
Hosea Chapter 7: Meaning
God sees all of Israel's sin and says the people keep turning to other nations instead of turning to him.
Summary
God says he wanted to heal Israel, but every time he looked closely, he saw more sin. The people of Samaria were cheating and lying. Their wicked ways were right out in the open, even though they did not think God noticed.
God compares the people to a hot oven. Their desires burned all night like a fire, and their passions got out of control. Kings were knocked down one after another, but no one called out to God for help. No one thought to turn to him.
Then God says Israel is like a flat bread that has not been turned over, burnt on one side and raw on the other. The people try to mix in with other nations and act like them. They go to Egypt and Assyria for help, flying around like a foolish bird. But God says he will catch them when they try to fly away. They have turned away from him, and that is why trouble is coming.
Historical Context
Around 730 BC, the nation of Israel was in big trouble. Its kings kept getting killed, and new ones kept taking over. Instead of asking God what to do, the leaders made deals with the powerful nations around them, first Assyria, then Egypt, hoping those countries would protect them.
The picture of a 'half-baked flat bread' would have made sense to people back then. Bread was cooked on hot stones. If you forgot to flip it, one side would burn and the other would still be raw. Hosea used this image to show that Israel was doing things halfway, not fully trusting God.
