JudgesChapter 16
Judges Chapter 16: Meaning
Samson falls in love with Delilah, who tricks him into revealing the secret of his strength, leading to his capture and death.
Summary
Samson went to the city of Gaza and carried off the entire city gate in the middle of the night to show his strength. Then he fell in love with a woman named Delilah. The Philistine leaders each paid Delilah a lot of money to find out where Samson's great strength came from.
Delilah kept asking Samson the question. Three times he gave her fake answers, and three times the Philistines tried to capture him based on those answers. But Samson broke free each time. Finally, after she kept nagging him day after day, he told her the truth: he had never cut his hair as part of his promise to God, and if his hair were shaved, his strength would be gone.
Delilah had someone shave Samson's head while he slept. He woke up thinking he could fight like before, but God had left him. The Philistines grabbed him, poked out his eyes, and locked him up in prison to do hard work. But while he was in prison, his hair began to grow back.
At a big party in the temple of their god Dagon, the Philistines brought Samson out to laugh at him. Samson asked a servant boy to lead him to the pillars holding up the building. He prayed to God for strength one last time. Then he pushed the pillars apart and the whole building collapsed. He killed more people in that moment than he had during his entire life. He died too, along with thousands of Philistines.
Historical Context
Gaza was one of the five big Philistine cities, located near the coast. It was a very important and strong city. Delilah's name may come from a word meaning 'night,' while Samson's name may mean 'sun', a hint that darkness was closing in on him.
The Philistine leaders each offered Delilah 1,100 pieces of silver, that was a huge amount of money. The temple of Dagon was a large building where the Philistines gathered to worship their god. When Samson destroyed it, he completed his purpose as a judge: he struck a major blow against the Philistines in his final act.
