JudithChapter 12

Judith Chapter 12: Meaning

Judith stays in the enemy camp, keeps her food rules, and is invited to Holofernes' party.

Summary
Holofernes offered Judith food and wine from his own fancy table, but she said no. She had brought her own food that followed God's rules. Holofernes asked what she would do when her food ran out, and she said God would take care of her before that happened. For three days, Judith slept in the camp and went out each night to pray and bathe in a spring. She was careful to stay clean before God. Then on the fourth day, Holofernes decided to throw a private party just for his top staff. Holofernes sent his helper Bagoas to invite Judith to the party. Judith said yes right away. She dressed up in her best clothes and went in. Holofernes was so amazed by her beauty that his mind was completely taken over. He drank more wine that night than he had ever drunk before in his whole life.

Historical Context

In ancient times, Jewish people followed strict food rules called dietary laws. These rules said what they could and could not eat. Judith keeping these rules even in the enemy camp shows how seriously she followed God.

This chapter sets up the key moment of the whole story. Holofernes is so focused on Judith's beauty that he loses all judgment. His overconfidence and drinking will soon lead to his downfall.
