JudithChapter 13

Judith Chapter 13: Meaning

Judith kills Holofernes, escapes with his head, and returns to her people as a hero.

Summary
After the party, everyone left and Holofernes passed out drunk on his bed. Judith was alone with him. She prayed to God for strength, then took his own sword and cut off his head. She put it in her food bag and walked out of the camp with her servant, just as she did every night for prayer. No one stopped them. Judith and her servant climbed back up the mountain to the city of Bethulia. She called out to the guards to open the gate. The people rushed out to meet her, lit torches, and gathered around. Judith held up Holofernes' head and told everyone that God had used her to destroy their enemy. The crowd was amazed and praised God. The leader Uzziah called Judith blessed above all women. He said her courage would never be forgotten. Then Achior, the man who had told Holofernes the truth about Israel, came to see what happened. When he saw the head of Holofernes, he fainted. When he woke up, he bowed at Judith's feet. After she told him everything, he believed in God and became part of the people of Israel.

Historical Context

This is the turning point of the whole Book of Judith. After days of careful planning and bravery, Judith carries out her mission. The city of Bethulia had been close to giving up, but now everything changes in one night.

Judith's act was seen as a miracle, one woman doing what a whole army could not do. This kind of story reminded Jewish readers that God can work through anyone, even a widow, to save his people.
