JudithChapter 14
Judith Chapter 14: Meaning
Judith's plan works: the Israelites march out, the Assyrians find Holofernes dead, and panic.
Summary
Judith told the people of Bethulia exactly what to do next. She said to hang Holofernes' head on the city wall. Then at dawn, every fighting man should grab his weapons and march toward the Assyrian camp as if going to battle. She said the Assyrians would run to find Holofernes and when they couldn't find him, they would panic and run away.
First, Judith wanted Achior brought to her. He came and saw the head of Holofernes. He was so shocked that he fainted. When he came back around, he bowed down before Judith. She told him everything she had done, and the crowd cheered. Achior believed in God completely and joined the people of Israel.
Early the next morning, the Israelites did exactly what Judith said. They hung the head on the wall and marched out. The Assyrian soldiers ran to alert their officers. The officers ran to wake Holofernes, but found him headless and dead on the floor. His servant Bagoas let out a horrifying scream. He ran through the camp shouting that one Hebrew woman had shamed their entire army. When the Assyrian commanders heard the news, they completely fell apart.
Historical Context
After a huge enemy army surrounds a city, the people inside were trapped and almost out of hope. Judith's plan used the enemy's own fear against them. In ancient warfare, when a commander was killed, his army often fell into confusion and ran.
This chapter shows how God's rescue is completed through human action and smart planning. Judith didn't just pray, she had a clear strategy for what should happen after she succeeded.
