JudithChapter 15
Judith Chapter 15: Meaning
The Assyrian army flees, Israel pursues them, and the people celebrate Judith as a hero.
Summary
The news about Holofernes spread through the Assyrian camp and everyone was terrified. Soldiers ran away in every direction, down the mountain roads and across the open fields. Not a single one dared to stay and fight. The Israelites chased after them and struck them down across a huge area. Fighters from Jerusalem and from places like Galilee and Gilead joined in the battle too.
After the enemy was gone, the people of Bethulia went into the abandoned Assyrian camp and collected everything left behind. Villages and towns all across Israel took huge amounts of spoil from the enemy's supplies. The celebration was enormous.
The high priest Joakim and the top leaders from Jerusalem traveled to Bethulia just to see what had happened and to honor Judith. They said she was the glory of Jerusalem and the pride of all Israel. The people kept plundering the camp for thirty days. They gave Judith Holofernes' tent and all his valuable things. Women came from all over Israel to celebrate her, and they formed a joyful procession through the streets with music and dancing.
Historical Context
After a great military victory in ancient times, it was common for the winning side to collect the weapons, supplies, and valuable goods left behind by the enemy. This was called taking spoils of war.
The arrival of the high priest from Jerusalem to honor Judith shows how important her deed was seen to be. It was not just a local victory, it was a rescue for the whole nation of Israel.
