JudithChapter 16

Judith Chapter 16: Meaning

Judith sings a song of praise to God, and she lives a long, honored life after the victory.

Summary
Judith led all of Israel in a great song of praise to God. In the song she described how the huge Assyrian army had come to destroy everything, but God stopped them through one woman. She sang that no mighty warrior or giant had defeated Holofernes. Instead, Judith, using only her beauty and courage, brought him down. The song praised God as all-powerful, the one who created everything and to whom no one can say no. After the celebration, the people went to Jerusalem to worship. They offered gifts to God at the temple. Judith gave away all of Holofernes' belongings, including the canopy from his tent, as a gift to God. The people celebrated in Jerusalem for three full months. Then everyone went home. Judith returned to her hometown of Bethulia and lived on her own land. She was famous and honored her whole life. Many men wanted to marry her, but she chose to stay single after her husband Manasseh died. She lived to be 105 years old. Before she died, she freed her servant and gave her belongings to her family. She was buried next to her husband, and all of Israel mourned her for seven days. For as long as she was alive, and for many years after, no one dared to trouble the people of Israel.

Historical Context

Songs of praise after a great victory were common in the Old Testament world. Famous examples include the song of Moses after crossing the Red Sea and the song of Deborah after defeating Sisera. Judith's song follows that same tradition.

The end of the book describes Judith living a long and peaceful life. This was seen as a sign of God's blessing. Her story became a lasting example of faith and courage for Jewish people for many generations.
