JudithChapter 4
Judith Chapter 4: Meaning
The Israelites hear about Holofernes and cry out to God in prayer and fasting.
Summary
The people of Israel heard what Holofernes had done to other nations. They were very scared. They knew he had destroyed temples and killed people everywhere he went. They were also worried about Jerusalem and the temple of God, which had only recently been restored after years of being in ruins.
The high priest Joakim quickly sent word to the people living near the mountain passes. He told them to block the paths into Judea so the enemy could not get through easily. The Israelites obeyed and got ready to defend their land.
But more than anything, the Israelites turned to God. Every person, men, women, children, even foreigners living with them, put on rough sackcloth and prayed. They poured ashes on their heads, fell down in front of the temple, and begged God not to let their enemies destroy their home and their place of worship. God heard their prayers.
Historical Context
The Israelites had recently come back from being taken captive in Babylon. They had just finished rebuilding and cleaning the temple in Jerusalem. So the threat of Holofernes felt even more terrifying, they could not bear to lose the temple again.
Fasting and wearing sackcloth was a traditional Jewish way of showing deep sadness and seriousness before God. It was a way of saying, "We truly need your help, Lord." Priests joining the people in this act showed just how serious the threat was.
