JudithChapter 5
Judith Chapter 5: Meaning
A man named Achior tells Holofernes the history of Israel and warns that God protects them.
Summary
Holofernes found out that the Israelites had blocked the mountain passes and were preparing to fight. This made him furious. He called his commanders together and demanded to know who these people were. Achior, a leader of the Ammonites, spoke up. He told the whole history of the Israelites, where they came from and why they were special.
Achior explained that the Israelites had come from Mesopotamia and had followed the one true God of heaven. He told how God had helped them escape from slavery in Egypt, how he had parted the Red Sea, and how he had helped them take the land of Canaan. Achior said one important thing: when the Israelites obeyed God, they won. When they sinned, they lost and were taken captive.
Achior gave Holofernes a serious warning. He said that if Israel had done nothing wrong, then God would protect them. Holofernes should not attack, or he would fail. This advice made Holofernes and his officers furious. They laughed at the idea that Israel could stop their army, and they called for Achior to be killed.
Historical Context
This chapter is like a short retelling of the whole Old Testament story. Achior summarizes how Abraham's family moved from Chaldea, how Israel was in Egypt, how God freed them, and how they eventually settled in Canaan. This was a way of reminding readers of God's faithfulness throughout history.
Achior was not an Israelite, but his message was wise and true. It was unusual for an outsider to speak up for Israel. His warning showed that even non-Israelites could recognize the power of Israel's God.
