LeviticusChapter 9

Leviticus Chapter 9: Meaning

On the eighth day, Aaron begins his work as priest and God sends fire to accept the offerings.

Summary
After seven days of being set apart, it was time for Aaron to start his work as high priest. God told Aaron to bring a calf and a ram for himself, one as a sin offering and one as a burnt offering. Then Aaron was to make offerings for all the people: a male goat as a sin offering, a calf and a lamb for burnt offerings, an ox and a ram for peace offerings, and a grain offering. Aaron followed all the steps carefully. He first offered the sin offering for himself to make himself clean before God. Then he made all the offerings for the people. He burned the fat and the organs on the altar. He waved the breast as an offering before God. When Aaron finished, he lifted his hands and blessed the people. Then Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle together. When they came out, they blessed the people again. God had promised that if they obeyed, his glory would appear. Then something amazing happened. Fire came out from the Lord and burned up everything on the altar, the burnt offering and the fat. When the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell flat on their faces. God had shown up.

Historical Context

The eighth day was the first day of real priestly work after the seven-day ordination. It was a very important day. Everything had been prepared, and now God would show whether he accepted the worship.

The fire that came from God was a sign that he was pleased with what Aaron had done. This same kind of fire from God appeared later when Solomon dedicated the temple. It showed that God himself was involved, the worship was not just a human ceremony, it was real.
