PhilippiansChapter 4

Philippians Chapter 4: Meaning

Paul tells the church to be joyful, stop worrying, think good thoughts, and trust God to meet their needs.

Summary
Paul starts by asking two women in the church, Euodia and Syntyche, to stop arguing and get along. He tells the whole church to rejoice always, not just once, but again and again. He reminds them the Lord is near, so they don't need to be afraid or anxious about anything. Instead of worrying, Paul says to pray. Tell God what you need, and say thank you at the same time. When you do that, God's peace, a peace that is hard to even explain, will guard your heart and mind. He also tells them to fill their minds with good things: things that are true, right, pure, and good. Paul also thanks the church for sending him help. He says he has learned to be happy whether he has a lot or a little. He has learned the secret of being content, and it comes from the strength Christ gives him. He tells them that God will take care of all their needs too, because of how rich He is in Christ Jesus.

Historical Context

Paul wrote this letter from prison around 2,000 years ago. He was locked up in Rome, but he still wanted to encourage the church in Philippi, a city in Greece. Even though he was in chains, he wrote with joy.

The church at Philippi had sent Paul money and supplies through a man named Epaphroditus. Paul wanted to thank them and make sure they stayed strong and joyful, even when life was hard.
