ProverbsChapter 10

Proverbs Chapter 10: Meaning

Solomon's proverbs compare wise and foolish people, showing how our words and choices lead to very different lives.

Summary
This chapter starts the main collection of Solomon's wise sayings. Each verse puts two ideas next to each other to show the difference between good and bad choices. A wise son makes his father happy. A foolish son causes his mother grief. Doing right keeps you safe. Doing wrong brings trouble. Many of the sayings are about work and money. Lazy hands lead to being poor. Diligent hands create wealth. A son who works hard in summer is smart. One who sleeps through harvest brings shame. God does not let the righteous go hungry, but he pushes away what evil people crave. A big theme in this chapter is the power of your words. The mouth of a good person is like a spring of clean water. But the mouth of a wicked person hides violence. Too many words lead to trouble. The person who controls their tongue acts wisely. Love covers over offenses, but hate stirs up fights. The chapter ends with more contrasts. Fearing the Lord adds years to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short. The hope of good people ends in joy. The wicked expect things that will never happen. God is a safe place for those who live rightly.

Historical Context

This is the start of what scholars call 'The Proverbs of Solomon,' which runs from chapter 10 all the way to chapter 22. These short sayings may have been collected in King Solomon's royal court around 900 BC. Solomon was famous throughout the ancient world for his wisdom, and many people came from far away to hear him speak.

These proverbs use a style called antithetical couplets, that means each verse has two parts that are opposites of each other. This style made sayings easy to remember and repeat. In ancient Israel, children learned wisdom by memorizing sayings like these.
