RomansChapter 5

Romans Chapter 5: Meaning

Because Jesus made us right with God, we now have peace, hope, and a love that never fails.

Summary
Now that God has made us right through faith, we have peace with him. We are no longer enemies. We can come right to God because of what Jesus did. And we have a confident hope that one day we will share in God's glory. This hope does not disappoint us. Paul also says that even when life is hard, we can find good in it. Hard times teach us to keep going. Keeping going builds good character. And that builds hope. On top of all this, God's love has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Here is something amazing: Christ died for us while we were still sinners. We were not cleaned up or good enough yet. God did not wait for us to be better. He showed his love by sending Jesus to die for us when we were still far from him. Paul then compares Adam and Jesus. Long ago, one man, Adam, sinned, and because of that, sin and death spread to everyone. But Jesus came as one man too. Through his one act of obedience, forgiveness and life are now available to everyone. Where sin grew, God's grace grew even more.

Historical Context

In Paul's day, people knew well that life could be very hard. The Roman world was full of poverty, war, and suffering. Paul's message that hard times can actually produce hope was very different from how the world thought.

Paul was also building on a Jewish idea about Adam being the first man whose choice brought sin into the world. He used that idea to explain why Jesus is so important. Just as one man brought the problem, one man brought the solution.
