SirachChapter 21

Sirach Chapter 21: Meaning

Ben Sira teaches that sin is dangerous and wisdom shows in how people talk and act.

Summary
This chapter starts with a warning about sin. Ben Sira tells us to stop sinning and ask for forgiveness. He says sin is like a snake, if you get too close, it will bite you. The path of sinners looks smooth and easy, but it ends in death. Next, Ben Sira talks about how wisdom and foolishness are very different. Wise people learn and grow. Their knowledge fills up like a flood. But fools are like cracked jars, they can't hold onto anything they learn. Fools don't like correction, but wise people welcome it. The chapter ends by comparing how wise people and fools act in public. Fools barge into homes and laugh loudly. They gossip and talk about others. Wise people wait patiently, choose their words carefully, and keep quiet when needed. A quiet, wise person will be respected and honored.

Historical Context

Sirach was written around 180 BC by a Jewish teacher named Ben Sira. He lived in Jerusalem when the Greek Empire ruled the land. Many Jewish people were tempted to follow Greek ways and forget God's law.

Ben Sira wrote this book to remind people that true wisdom comes from fearing God and following his law. He wanted young people to learn good habits before it was too late.
