SirachChapter 22

Sirach Chapter 22: Meaning

Ben Sira warns about laziness and foolishness, and gives advice on keeping good friendships.

Summary
The chapter opens with strong warnings about lazy people. Ben Sira says a lazy person is like a smelly stone or a pile of garbage, everyone is disgusted by them. He also talks about poorly raised children who bring shame to their family. Then Ben Sira compares teaching a fool to gluing a broken pot, it's pointless. He says it's better to mourn for a fool than for someone who died, because the fool's life is worse than death. He warns us not to spend too much time with foolish people, because they will drag us down with them. The last part of the chapter is about friendship. Ben Sira says most conflicts between friends can be fixed. But if you insult someone, betray their secrets, or stab them in the back, the friendship is over for good. He ends with a prayer asking God to help him control his mouth so he doesn't say something he will regret.

Historical Context

Ben Sira wrote this book in Jerusalem around 180 BC. At that time, family honor was very important. A lazy child or a shameful daughter brought real problems to the whole family in their community.

Friendship was also taken very seriously. In that culture, betraying a friend's trust was one of the worst things a person could do. Ben Sira's warnings were practical advice for everyday life.

Be careful who you spend time with, because foolish friends can lead you into trouble.
Most arguments with friends can be worked out if you try.
Never share a friend's secrets, because that destroys trust completely.
Ask God to help you control what you say before you say something harmful.
