SirachChapter 23

Sirach Chapter 23: Meaning

Ben Sira prays for self-control and warns about swearing, foul talk, lust, and cheating.

Summary
The chapter begins with a prayer. Ben Sira asks God to help him stay in control, to keep his thoughts pure, guard him from pride and lust, and protect him from shameful behavior. He knows he can't do it on his own. Then he teaches about the mouth and the tongue. He warns against swearing oaths over and over using God's name. He says that person will be full of sin. He also warns against getting used to foul or vulgar talk. Bad habits with words lead to bigger problems. He reminds young people to think about their parents when sitting among important people so they don't embarrass themselves. The final part of the chapter talks about people who give in to sexual sin. A person who cheats on their spouse thinks no one can see them. But Ben Sira says God sees everything, his eyes are like the sun, ten thousand times brighter. That person will be caught and punished in public. The chapter ends by saying the greatest gift in life is fearing God and following his commands.

Historical Context

Ben Sira wrote this around 180 BC in Jerusalem. In that time, oaths were serious public promises. Swearing by God's name lightly was considered very disrespectful and dangerous.

Marriage and family loyalty were central to Jewish society. Cheating on a spouse was not just a personal failure, it was a public disgrace that brought shame on the entire family. Ben Sira's warnings were grounded in the real problems he saw in his community.
