SirachChapter 24
Sirach Chapter 24: Meaning
Wisdom speaks and describes how she came from God, lived among Israel, and invites everyone to follow her.
Summary
In this chapter, Wisdom is described as a person who speaks for herself. She says she came from the mouth of God and covered the earth like a mist. She wandered across the whole world looking for a place to live. Then God commanded her to make her home in Israel, the people he chose.
Wisdom describes herself using pictures from nature. She is like a tall cedar tree, a fragrant cinnamon plant, and a full grapevine. She says she is the mother of love, knowledge, and holy hope. She invites everyone to come to her and eat. Those who eat and drink from her will want more, wisdom never fully satisfies, and that is a good thing.
Ben Sira then connects Wisdom to the Law of Moses. The Torah, God's law, is the place where wisdom lives. He compares wisdom to great rivers that overflow with water. He says no one has ever fully understood wisdom. Her thoughts are as wide as the sea and as deep as the ocean. Ben Sira says he was like a small stream himself, but through God's blessing he became like a great river.
Historical Context
This chapter was written around 180 BC when Jewish people were being pressured to accept Greek culture and thinking. Greek philosophers claimed their wisdom was the highest kind.
Ben Sira pushes back by saying that true wisdom is found in the Jewish scriptures, specifically the Law of Moses. Connecting wisdom to the Torah was a bold and important statement for his time.
