SirachChapter 28
Sirach Chapter 28: Meaning
Ben Sira urges people to forgive others and warns that the tongue can cause terrible damage.
Summary
The chapter opens with a clear rule: if you take revenge, God will take note of your sins. But if you forgive others, God will forgive you. Ben Sira asks why anyone would expect mercy from God if they refuse to show mercy to another person. He reminds us that we are all just humans, and we will all die. So let go of anger and follow God's commandments.
Then Ben Sira warns strongly against quarreling. Arguing leads to more sin. A hot-tempered person starts fights the way fire spreads through dry wood. A single spark can start a blaze, and a harsh word can start a war. He urges readers to walk away from conflict before it becomes deadly.
The rest of the chapter is a serious warning about the tongue and gossip. Ben Sira says the tongue has caused more damage than swords. It has broken up friendships, torn apart cities, and driven good people from their homes. He says we must guard our mouths the way we would protect valuable property. We should put a door on our lips and only open it carefully.
Historical Context
Ben Sira wrote this around 180 BC in Jerusalem, a time of political tension between different groups of Jewish people and outside rulers. Gossip, slander, and conflict were very real problems in that community.
In Jewish teaching, forgiving others was connected to being forgiven by God. Ben Sira's teaching here echoes themes from the Psalms and the Prophets. His warning about the tongue also connects to wisdom in the book of Proverbs.
