SirachChapter 29

Sirach Chapter 29: Meaning

Ben Sira gives practical advice about lending money, helping the poor, and being content with what you have.

Summary
This chapter opens with teaching about lending money. Ben Sira says helping a neighbor in need is an act of mercy and a sign of keeping God's commands. He urges people to repay loans on time and keep their word. But he also warns that some borrowers are dishonest, they borrow and then make excuses or disappear. Even so, Ben Sira says we should not give up on being generous. Help those in need. Give to the poor as the commandments require. Charitable giving is like saving up treasure that will protect you in hard times. He also warns about cosigning loans, agreeing to pay someone else's debt if they can't. This has ruined many good people. The final section is about having your own home and being content. Ben Sira says the basics of life are simple: food, water, clothing, and shelter. A poor person in their own simple home is better off than a rich guest who has no place to call their own. Being a guest in someone else's house is humiliating. You hear harsh words and feel unwelcome. It is better to live simply and independently.

Historical Context

Ben Sira wrote around 180 BC when poverty was common in Jerusalem. Jewish law in books like Exodus and Leviticus commanded people to lend to the poor without charging interest. Ben Sira is applying that law to everyday life.

Cosigning loans, agreeing to be responsible for someone else's debt, was a real risk in ancient markets. Ben Sira had seen people lose their homes this way, and he wanted to warn others without telling them to stop being generous altogether.

Helping people in need is part of following God's commands, not just a nice thing to do.
If you borrow something, repay it promptly — your honesty matters more than the money.
Giving to those in need is like storing up treasure that will protect you in hard times.
Be careful about taking on other people's financial responsibilities — it can cost you everything.
A simple life in your own home is far better than a fancy life depending on others.
