SirachChapter 34
Sirach Chapter 34: Meaning
Ben Sira warns about the dangers of loving money too much and gives advice about food and wine.
Summary
The chapter starts with a warning about wealth. Worrying about money all the time is exhausting. It robs you of sleep and peace. The rich person works hard to get more, and the poor person barely survives. Those who love gold too much will be ruined by it. But the person who is rich and still honest and fair, that person is truly blessed.
Next, Ben Sira gives advice about eating at a banquet. Don't eat like a greedy person at someone else's table. A greedy eye is a wicked thing. Think about how your neighbor feels. Take only what you need. Eat politely and stop before you are stuffed. Eating too much causes sickness and sleepless nights, while eating in moderation keeps you healthy.
Then the chapter talks about wine. A little wine can bring joy and is part of a good life. But drinking too much wine is dangerous. It leads to fights, bad behavior, and serious harm. Wine tests what a person is really like on the inside.
The chapter ends with a reminder not to embarrass someone at a dinner party. Don't put people down or demand that they pay you back when they are just trying to enjoy themselves.
Historical Context
Ben Sira wrote this around 180 BC in Jerusalem. In that time, big banquets were important social events. How you behaved at the table said a lot about your character. Greed and drunkenness were seen as serious failures of self-control.
Wealthy people in the ancient world often competed for status and riches. Ben Sira challenged his readers to put honesty and fairness above the pursuit of gold.
