SirachChapter 35
Sirach Chapter 35: Meaning
Ben Sira gives rules for behaving well at a dinner party and for making wise decisions in life.
Summary
The chapter opens with advice for someone hosting or attending a dinner party. If you are in charge, take care of the guests first before sitting down. When elders are speaking, listen rather than jumping in. Young people especially should stay quiet unless asked. Keep your words short and wise. Don't overstay your welcome, leave at the right time and go straight home.
Ben Sira then says that even after the party, make sure you give thanks to God who gave you all of this. Fear of the Lord leads to wisdom. People who truly respect God will understand what is right. But hypocrites, people who pretend to follow God, will stumble over his law.
Next, the chapter talks about making good decisions. Don't do anything without thinking it through. Get advice before you act. Once you have decided, don't keep second-guessing yourself. Watch out for dangers on the road of life, even ones you've seen before.
The chapter ends with the encouraging message that God protects those who trust him. Whoever fears the Lord will be kept safe even when hard times come. A wise person holds on to God's law, but a fake believer is like a boat being tossed around in a storm.
Historical Context
Ben Sira wrote this around 180 BC, when dinner parties and banquets were an important part of Jewish and Greek social life in Jerusalem. How you behaved at a meal showed your character and wisdom. Ben Sira used everyday situations to teach bigger lessons about respecting God and others.
In that era, teachers like Ben Sira were expected to guide young men on how to act in public. Good behavior at meals was considered a mark of education and good character.
