SirachChapter 38
Sirach Chapter 38: Meaning
Ben Sira praises doctors, teaches how to grieve well, and honors the hard work of craftsmen.
Summary
The chapter opens with praise for doctors. God himself created physicians and gave them their skill. Medicines come from plants God made in the earth. When you are sick, you should both pray to God and see the doctor, you need both. Pray honestly, turn away from sin, and then let the doctor do his work. God works through doctors to bring healing.
Next, Ben Sira gives advice about grieving. When someone you love dies, it is right to cry and mourn. Go through the grieving period properly, but don't let it go on forever. After a short time, find comfort. Giving yourself over completely to sorrow can destroy your own health. Remember that you too will die someday, so make the most of the life you have now.
Then the chapter talks about workers and craftsmen. Farmers, blacksmiths, potters, and other tradespeople work very hard with their hands. They don't get famous or sit on judges' seats. They probably won't be known for wisdom or clever sayings. But without them, no city could survive. They do essential work that keeps the world running.
The chapter ends by noting that even though craftsmen don't lead public life, they are faithful in their work, and that faithfulness is its own kind of prayer.
Historical Context
Ben Sira wrote this around 180 BC in Jerusalem. At that time, some religious leaders looked down on manual workers and only respected scholars. Ben Sira pushed back on that attitude by showing that all honest work has value before God.
In the ancient world, medicine was often mixed with religious ideas. Some people thought going to a doctor showed a lack of faith. Ben Sira's bold statement that God created doctors was an important correction, prayer and medicine can work together.
