SirachChapter 39

Sirach Chapter 39: Meaning

Ben Sira describes the life of a wise scholar and calls everyone to praise God for all his works.

Summary
The chapter opens with a picture of the ideal wise person. He studies ancient wisdom, the words of the prophets, and the hidden meanings of proverbs. He travels, meets great leaders, and learns from many different people. Most importantly, he rises early to pray and seek God. God rewards this kind of person with deep understanding and overflowing wisdom that he shares with others. Ben Sira then bursts into a call to praise God. He invites his readers to bloom like flowers and give off sweet fragrance like incense. He wants everyone to sing praises with harps and joyful hearts. All of God's works are good. Everything happens at the right time, according to God's plan. Next, Ben Sira explains that God's blessings flow like a flooding river over those who love him. But the same creation that blesses the good brings punishment to the wicked. Water, fire, iron, and salt, the basic things of life, serve the godly for good but turn to harm for those who do evil. Even storms, famine, and wild beasts obey God and carry out his will. The chapter ends with the conclusion that everything God made is good. Every created thing serves its purpose at the right time. So we should praise God with our whole heart and mouth. But then the text also notes that all people share in hardship, from kings to the poorest of the poor.

Historical Context

Ben Sira wrote this around 180 BC in Jerusalem, where scholars and scribes were important figures in Jewish society. He painted a high picture of what a devoted scholar looked like, someone who combined serious study with deep prayer.

In that era, Jewish teachers were expected to know not just the law but also wisdom literature, proverbs, and history. Ben Sira's vision of the ideal scholar would have been recognizable and inspiring to his students.
