SirachChapter 40

Sirach Chapter 40: Meaning

Ben Sira says all people face hardship and then lists things that are good, with fearing God as the best of all.

Summary
The chapter opens with a big truth: life is hard for everyone. From the day a person is born until the day they die, there is struggle and worry. Even at night, people are troubled by bad dreams and restless thoughts. Kings and beggars alike face fear, jealousy, and the weight of knowing they will die. Sinners have it even harder, they face extra trouble on top of the hardships everyone shares. Ben Sira then says that injustice will not last. Bribery and dishonesty will be wiped away. The wealth of the wicked will dry up. But kindness and generosity endure forever. The person who gives to others will have joy, while those who do wrong will come to nothing. Next, the chapter becomes like a list of comparisons. Children are good, and building a city is good, but a faithful wife is better than both. Wine and music are wonderful, but wisdom is better. A friend is great, but a wife by your side is better still. Brothers and money are helpful in hard times, but giving to others helps even more. Fear of the Lord beats everything, wealth, strength, and all the rest. The chapter ends with a warning about begging. It is better to die than to live as a beggar. Having to depend on someone else's table for your food is a hollow kind of life. A wise person works hard to avoid that situation.

Historical Context

Ben Sira wrote this around 180 BC. Jewish wisdom teachers often used comparison lists to make a point. By stacking up 'good things' and showing that fear of the Lord beats them all, Ben Sira drove home the most important lesson of his whole book.

In ancient society, begging was a sign of total failure, it meant you had no family, no land, and no standing in the community. Ben Sira's warning against it was practical advice for people who valued honor and self-sufficiency.
