SirachChapter 4

Sirach Chapter 4: Meaning

Help the poor, pursue wisdom boldly, stand up for truth, and be fair in how you treat others.

Summary
This chapter begins with strong commands about how to treat poor people. Don't ignore them, don't delay helping them, and don't make their hard lives even harder. If you treat a poor person cruelly and they cry out to God, God will hear that prayer. Be kind, speak gently, and defend people who are being treated unfairly. Next comes teaching about wisdom. Wisdom is like a person who reaches out to those who seek her. She loves those who love her, and she rewards those who hold on to her with glory and blessing. But wisdom doesn't come easily at first, she will test the person who wants her. She will make things feel rough and scary. But if the person sticks with it, wisdom will fill them with joy and reveal her secrets. The chapter closes with advice about being honest and brave. Don't hide your true thoughts when they can help. Speak up for the truth even if it costs you something. Confess when you're wrong. Don't bow down to fools, and don't favor the powerful just because they are powerful. Be someone whose words and actions actually match up, don't be loud with your mouth but lazy in what you do.

Historical Context

Ben Sira wrote this around 180 BC in Jerusalem. In that society, there were many poor people who had very little protection from those who were wealthy or powerful. Jewish law had long commanded people to care for widows, orphans, and the poor. Ben Sira reinforced these values because he saw that people were sometimes ignoring them.

He also knew that learning wisdom was not easy. In his culture, students went to teachers and were expected to work hard, accept correction, and be patient. His picture of wisdom as a difficult but rewarding teacher matched what his students were already experiencing.
