SirachChapter 5

Sirach Chapter 5: Meaning

Don't trust in money or assume God's patience means no consequences, watch your words carefully.

Summary
This chapter warns against putting your trust in the wrong things. Don't rely on your money or your own strength and think you have everything figured out. And don't use God's patience as an excuse to keep sinning, telling yourself that nothing bad will happen. God is patient, but his anger will still come if you refuse to change. Don't wait too long to turn back to him. The chapter also warns against thinking your wealth can protect you on a bad day. Money made by doing wrong things will be useless when real trouble hits. Don't be the kind of person who changes with every breeze or follows every new idea, that is the behavior of someone with a double tongue who says different things to different people. The last part focuses on words and speech. Be quick to listen and slow to answer. Think before you speak. A careless tongue can ruin your whole life. Don't gossip and don't talk out of both sides of your mouth. People who do those things earn hatred and disgrace. Instead, be someone who speaks honestly and treats everyone the same.

Historical Context

Ben Sira wrote this around 180 BC in Jerusalem. At that time, wealth was seen as a sign of blessing, and some people trusted their money more than they trusted God. Ben Sira challenged this thinking directly.

He also lived in a time when false speech and political double-dealing were real dangers. In that culture, someone who said one thing to your face and something different behind your back was considered one of the worst kinds of people. Ben Sira's warnings about the tongue reflect how seriously the ancient world took honesty in speech.
