SirachChapter 45

Sirach Chapter 45: Meaning

Ben Sira honors Moses, Aaron, and Phinehas for their special roles as leaders and priests.

Summary
This chapter praises three great men from Israel's history. First is Moses. Ben Sira says God loved Moses and made him great. God spoke to Moses directly, gave him the commandments, and let him see a glimpse of his glory. Moses was chosen because he was faithful and humble. He taught God's law to the people of Israel. Next is Aaron, Moses' brother. God chose Aaron to be the first high priest. Ben Sira describes Aaron's priestly clothes in detail, the robe, the golden crown, the breastplate with the Urim and Thummim, and the golden bells that rang as he walked in the temple. These clothes were beautiful and meant to show how holy and special the priesthood was. When enemies like Korah and his followers rebelled against Aaron, God punished them with fire. The last person mentioned is Phinehas, grandson of Aaron. Ben Sira says Phinehas was zealous for God. He stood firm when the people sinned, and because of that God made a covenant of peace with him and gave his family the priesthood forever. The chapter ends with a reminder that, just like David's royal line, Aaron's priestly line was meant to be honored and kept.

Historical Context

Ben Sira wrote around 180 BC, and the priesthood was still very important in his day. The high priest in Jerusalem held great power, spiritual and sometimes political. By praising Moses and Aaron, Ben Sira was reminding readers that the priesthood came from God himself, not from human politics.

The story of Korah's rebellion (mentioned briefly here) comes from Numbers 16. It shows that the priesthood was serious and not to be taken lightly. Ben Sira wanted people to respect and support the priests of his own day.
