Sirach Chapter 46: Meaning
Ben Sira praises Joshua, Caleb, the judges, and Samuel for their courage and faithfulness to God.
Summary
This chapter honors Joshua, the great military leader who led Israel into the Promised Land after Moses died. Ben Sira says Joshua was mighty in battle. He reminds readers of the famous miracle when the sun stood still so Joshua could finish defeating his enemies. Joshua followed God completely and led Israel to victory.
Ben Sira also mentions Caleb, Joshua's companion. When the other Israelites were afraid to enter the Promised Land, Joshua and Caleb were the two who trusted God and spoke up. Because of their faithfulness, they were the only ones of their generation allowed to enter the land. God kept Caleb strong even into old age, and he was able to claim the territory God had promised him.
The chapter then briefly honors the judges, the leaders who governed Israel between Joshua and the time of kings. Ben Sira says those judges who did not worship idols deserve to be remembered. Finally, he praises Samuel, who was a prophet and judge. Samuel anointed Israel's first kings, prayed for the people, and lived with complete integrity. Even after he died, his spirit spoke to warn King Saul of what was coming.
Historical Context
Joshua and Caleb were key figures from the book of Joshua, around 1200 BC. Ben Sira wrote about them roughly a thousand years later to remind readers of what faithful leadership looks like. At a time when foreign ideas were pressuring Jewish people to compromise, these stories served as powerful examples.
Samuel lived around 1100–1000 BC. He was the last major judge and the prophet who anointed both Saul and David as kings. Ben Sira respected Samuel deeply because he was honest, courageous, and loyal to God throughout his life.
