SirachChapter 50
Sirach Chapter 50: Meaning
Ben Sira praises the high priest Simon and ends the book with a blessing and personal signature.
Summary
This chapter begins with high praise for Simon, the high priest and son of Onias. Simon repaired and strengthened the temple. He built up the city walls, dug a huge water reservoir, and looked after his people. Ben Sira describes Simon using many beautiful images, like the morning star, the full moon, a rainbow, roses in spring, and a blazing fire in a censer. These comparisons show how glorious Simon appeared to his people.
Ben Sira then describes Simon leading worship in the temple. The priests were dressed in splendor. Simon received the portions for offering, stood at the altar, and poured out a drink offering. The trumpets sounded, and the whole crowd fell to the ground in worship. The singers sang beautifully. Then Simon raised his hands and pronounced God's blessing over all the people, and they bowed down again in worship.
The chapter ends with a call to praise God, who does wonders and has been merciful to Israel. Ben Sira prays for peace and joy for his people. He then briefly expresses disgust for three groups he considers enemies of Israel, the people of Mount Seir, the Philistines, and the people of Shechem. Finally, Ben Sira signs his name to the book and promises that whoever studies his wisdom and puts it into practice will find great blessing.
Historical Context
Simon the high priest lived around 220–195 BC, not long before Ben Sira wrote this book. Ben Sira likely witnessed Simon's leadership firsthand. The high priest in Jerusalem was one of the most respected and powerful figures in Jewish life, he led worship, represented the people before God, and had political influence.
This chapter is one of the most vivid descriptions of temple worship ever written. It gives us a rare picture of what a major Jewish worship service looked like in the second century BC, just a few generations before the New Testament era.
