SirachChapter 51

Sirach Chapter 51: Meaning

Ben Sira thanks God for rescuing him from danger and shares how he searched for wisdom his whole life.

Summary
This final chapter is Ben Sira's personal prayer of thanks. He says he will praise God, who saved him from many dangers. He describes being surrounded by enemies, threatened by slander and lies, trapped in what felt like fire, and almost dragged down into death. In all these troubles he cried out to God and remembered God's past deeds of rescue. God heard his prayer and saved him. Ben Sira then talks about his lifelong love for wisdom. He says he began seeking wisdom as a young man, even before he traveled abroad. He prayed for her at the temple. He pursued wisdom with passion, like tracking something precious. At first it was hard work, but he received wisdom and made great progress. He says God gave him a tongue as his reward, the ability to teach and praise. The chapter ends with an invitation to others. Ben Sira calls out to anyone who lacks learning and tells them to come and get wisdom, it does not cost money. Just put your neck under wisdom's yoke, be willing to learn, and wisdom will be found nearby. He promises that a little effort in learning leads to great rest and rich reward. He ends with a call to do your work before time runs out, and God will give you what you deserve.

Historical Context

This final chapter of Sirach has two parts, a thanksgiving psalm and a poem about seeking wisdom. Some scholars believe the poem at the end is an acrostic (each line starting with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet), which was a common Hebrew literary style.

Ben Sira wrote this book around 180 BC. In this closing chapter, he becomes very personal. He shares his own story of danger and rescue, and his own journey in seeking wisdom. It is a fitting end to a book full of practical and spiritual teaching.
