TobitChapter 1
Tobit Chapter 1: Meaning
Tobit tells about his faithful life in Israel and how he was taken captive to Nineveh.
Summary
Tobit introduces himself and his family. He was from the tribe of Naphtali in Israel. Even when his whole tribe turned away from God and worshiped false idols, Tobit kept following God's laws. He regularly traveled to Jerusalem to give tithes and offerings, and he shared his food and clothing with the poor.
Tobit and his people were eventually taken captive to Nineveh in Assyria. While everyone else there ate the food of the gentiles, Tobit refused. He stayed true to God. Because of this, God gave him favor with the Assyrian king, and Tobit became the king's purchasing agent.
Tobit kept doing good deeds in Nineveh. He fed the hungry, clothed those with no clothes, and secretly buried the bodies of Jewish people who had been killed. This was dangerous. When the king found out, Tobit had to flee and lost everything he owned, keeping only his wife Anna and his son Tobias.
After the king died, his son Esarhaddon took over. Tobit's nephew Ahiqar helped Tobit return to Nineveh, and all of Tobit's property was given back to him.
Historical Context
This story is set around 700 BC, when the Assyrian Empire was very powerful. The Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom of Israel and forced many Jewish people to move to Assyria's capital city, Nineveh. This was a real historical event.
Many Jewish captives gave up their faith and customs to fit in. Tobit's story shows what it looked like to stay faithful to God even while living in a foreign land under a powerful enemy king.
