TobitChapter 2
Tobit Chapter 2: Meaning
Tobit stops a holiday meal to bury a dead man and then goes blind from bird droppings.
Summary
Tobit and his family sat down for a big Pentecost feast. Before he ate, Tobit sent his son Tobias to find a poor Jewish person to join them. Tobias came back with sad news instead, a Jewish man had been killed and thrown in the marketplace. Tobit immediately left the table. He carried the body inside and buried it after dark.
His neighbors mocked him. They reminded him that he had already been in trouble before for burying the dead. But Tobit didn't care. That same night, after burying the man, he fell asleep outside near a wall. Sparrows were in the wall above him, and their droppings fell into his eyes. Over time, white films grew over his eyes and he became blind. Doctors could not help him.
Tobit's wife Anna began weaving cloth to earn money for the family. One day her employer gave her a young goat as a bonus. When Tobit heard it bleating, he accused her of stealing it. She got angry and told him to look at what his good deeds had gotten him, they were poor, he was blind, and no one had helped him in return.
Historical Context
Pentecost, also called the Feast of Weeks, was one of the most important Jewish holidays. It was a time to thank God for the harvest. Jewish people in exile still tried to celebrate these feasts to stay connected to their faith.
Burying the dead was considered a very important act of kindness in Jewish culture. But under Assyrian rule, the king sometimes forbade the burial of people he had executed. Doing it anyway put Tobit at real risk, and his neighbors knew it.
