TobitChapter 3
Tobit Chapter 3: Meaning
Tobit and a woman named Sarah both pray in sadness, and God sends the angel Raphael to help them.
Summary
Tobit was very sad. He prayed to God and admitted the sins of himself and his people. He asked God to take his life, saying it would be better to die than to keep living in pain and shame. He felt deeply hopeless.
At the same time, far away in Media, a young woman named Sarah was also in terrible pain. She had been married seven times, and a demon named Asmodeus had killed every one of her husbands before the marriage could begin. Her servants mocked her and blamed her for the deaths. Sarah considered ending her own life, but she did not want to bring shame on her father. Instead, she prayed to God. She told God she was innocent and asked him to either take her life or show her mercy.
Both prayers were heard by God at the same time. God decided to send his angel Raphael to help them both. Raphael would heal Tobit's blindness and bring Sarah and Tobias together in marriage. God had a plan for both of them, even in their darkest moments.
Historical Context
The story is set in two places: Nineveh, the Assyrian capital where Tobit lived, and Ecbatana, the capital of Media. Both were real cities. Jewish people were scattered across these regions after being taken captive.
Angels in Jewish belief acted as messengers sent by God to carry out his purposes. The idea that God hears prayers and sends help, even when life feels hopeless, is a central teaching throughout the Old Testament and the books of the Apocrypha.
