Wisdom of SolomonChapter 1
Wisdom of Solomon Chapter 1: Meaning
A call to love what is right and trust God, who sees all things and did not make death.
Summary
This chapter opens with a call to love what is right. It tells people who lead others to look for God with an honest heart. God is not hard to find for those who truly want him. But if people think twisted thoughts or act in evil ways, wisdom will not live in them.
The chapter explains that God sees and hears everything. Nothing can be hidden from him. Every secret word and every wicked thought is known. Because of this, people should guard their words and stop complaining and telling lies.
Then the chapter shares an important truth: God did not make death. He created everything to live and thrive. Righteousness, or doing what is right, is said to be immortal, it lasts forever. But wicked people brought death into the world by their own choices. They made friends with death, and so death became their fate.
Historical Context
The Wisdom of Solomon was written a long time ago, probably about 50 to 100 years before Jesus was born. It was written by a Jewish author, likely in Egypt, where many Jewish people lived. The author wrote in the style of the wise king Solomon to teach people how to live well.
This book is part of a group of writings called the Deuterocanon or Apocrypha. It was written to encourage Jewish people who were surrounded by others who did not believe in God. The author wanted to show that wisdom and righteousness are more valuable than wealth or power.
