Wisdom of SolomonChapter 2

Wisdom of Solomon Chapter 2: Meaning

Wicked people say life is short, so they should do whatever they want and hurt the righteous.

Summary
This chapter lets us hear the thoughts of wicked people. They believe that life is short and ends completely when a person dies. They think no one comes back after death. Because of this, they decide to enjoy every pleasure they can find, wine, parties, and luxury, since they think nothing matters in the end. These wicked people then say they will pick on the poor and helpless. They want to use their power to do whatever they like. They especially hate righteous people because a good person is a reminder that they are doing wrong. The righteous man calls himself a child of God, and the wicked people find that annoying. So they plan to test him, insult him, torture him, and even put him to death. The chapter ends by saying these wicked people were completely wrong. Their own evil had blinded them. They did not understand that God made people to last forever. They did not know about the reward waiting for those who live rightly. The book then explains that death came into the world through the devil's jealousy, and those who follow the devil experience it.

Historical Context

The Wisdom of Solomon was written around the time when Jewish people lived under foreign rulers who often treated them poorly. The ideas in this chapter reflect real fears that good people suffered while evil people seemed to get away with everything.

The wicked speech in this chapter sounds a lot like the thinking of those who did not believe in life after death. The author used this to show how wrong that kind of thinking is, and to reassure believers that God's plan for the righteous is far better than anything they can see in this life.

What This Means Today

People who think life has no meaning after death often end up hurting others.
Doing what is right can make others uncomfortable, and they may not always like you for it.
Do not let others talk you out of living a good life just because they disagree.
God made us for something bigger than just this short life on earth.
Evil often comes from jealousy — be careful not to let jealousy lead you in the wrong direction.
