Wisdom of SolomonChapter 10

Wisdom of Solomon Chapter 10: Meaning

Wisdom protected and guided righteous people throughout history, from Adam to the Exodus from Egypt.

Summary
This chapter tells a quick story of history through the lens of wisdom. It starts with the very first man, Adam. Wisdom protected him after he sinned and gave him strength to rule over all things. Then an unrighteous man, Cain, walked away from wisdom in his anger and killed his brother, bringing destruction on himself. The chapter moves through familiar stories. Wisdom saved Noah during the great flood by steering the righteous man on a simple piece of wood. She kept Abraham faithful and steady when God tested him. She rescued Lot when the five wicked cities were destroyed. She guided Jacob when he fled from his angry brother Esau, showing him the kingdom of God and helping him prosper. And when Jacob was cheated by greedy men, wisdom made him wealthy anyway. The chapter ends with Moses and the people of Israel. Wisdom entered the soul of a servant, Moses, and used him to stand before powerful kings with signs and wonders. She guided the Israelites through the wilderness, sheltering them by day and lighting their way at night. She led them through the Red Sea and drowned their enemies in the deep. The righteous sang praises to God for the hand that fought for them. Wisdom even opened the mouths of those who could not speak.

Historical Context

This chapter is a review of stories from the early books of the Bible, Genesis and Exodus, but told from the perspective of wisdom. The author uses these well-known stories to show that wisdom was at work throughout all of Israel's history, protecting and guiding God's people.

This kind of retelling was common in Jewish writing of the time. By looking back at history, the author encouraged readers who were going through hard times to trust that the same wisdom that rescued their ancestors was still active and available to them.
