Wisdom of SolomonChapter 11

Wisdom of Solomon Chapter 11: Meaning

God helped Israel by turning Egypt's punishments into blessings for his own people.

Summary
This chapter looks back at how God helped the Israelites during the Exodus. A holy prophet, Moses, led the people through the desert. When they were thirsty, God gave them water from a rock. The same things that brought Egypt pain brought Israel blessing. The writer points out something amazing: God punished Egypt with a shortage of water, but gave Israel plenty of it. The Egyptians suffered the very things they had done to others. Egypt had killed babies, so God made them thirst for water while Israel drank freely. The chapter then asks: why didn't God just destroy Egypt with lions or fire-breathing monsters? He could have. But God chose to punish slowly so people had a chance to turn back to him. He measures all things with care. The chapter ends with a beautiful thought: God loves everything he made. He would never have created something he hated. He keeps all things alive because he loves them. He is patient and full of mercy.

Historical Context

This book was written by a Jewish teacher in Alexandria, Egypt, around 100–50 BC. He was thinking about the story of Moses and the Exodus, when God freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. He used that story to show that God always protects his people.

The writer was talking to Jewish people who lived among people who worshipped other gods. He wanted to remind them that the God of Israel is the true God, the one who controls all things and loves all people.
