Wisdom of SolomonChapter 18

Wisdom of Solomon Chapter 18: Meaning

God protected Israel with light and sent his word to strike down Egypt's firstborn.

Summary
While Egypt was stuck in darkness, God's people had light. The Egyptians could hear the Israelites but couldn't see them. Knowing they had been mistreating these people, the Egyptians actually felt grateful that Israel wasn't harming them in return. God gave his people a pillar of fire to guide them through the night and light their way. The chapter then tells the story of the last and worst plague, the death of Egypt's firstborn sons. The Egyptians had tried to kill Israel's babies long ago. Now, in one terrible night, all of Egypt's firstborn children died at once. Rich and poor, slave and king, everyone lost someone. The Egyptians finally admitted that Israel was God's own child. In that silent midnight, God's powerful word leaped down from heaven like a warrior. It carried out God's command and filled the land with death. At the same time, God's people were singing hymns and preparing together in secret. They had been told in advance that this night was coming, and they trusted God's promise. But even Israel faced a brief danger in the wilderness when a plague broke out among them. A brave man, the priest Aaron, rushed out with incense and prayer. He stood between the living and the dead and stopped the plague. His priestly robe showed the whole world on it. The destroyer saw him and retreated.

Historical Context

This chapter focuses on the last plague of Egypt, the death of the firstborn, and the events of the Passover night (Exodus 11–12). It also references the time in the wilderness when Aaron stopped a plague with his priestly intercession (Numbers 16:46–48).

The writer, composing around 100–50 BC, wanted Jewish readers to see these events as proof of God's faithfulness. The night of the Passover was a defining moment in Jewish identity. He also honored the priesthood by showing how one faithful man's prayer could stop a disaster.
