Wisdom of SolomonChapter 19
Wisdom of Solomon Chapter 19: Meaning
God rescued Israel through the Red Sea and punished Egypt for chasing them.
Summary
This chapter describes what happened after the Israelites left Egypt. God already knew the Egyptians would change their minds. Even while still crying over their dead, the Egyptians decided to chase the Israelites. They forgot what had just happened to them and ran after the very people they had begged to leave. This foolishness sealed their punishment.
Then came an incredible miracle. The whole creation was rearranged to protect God's people. Where there had been water, dry land appeared. The Red Sea opened up and Israel walked through on dry ground, like walking through a green meadow. They moved freely like horses and leaped like lambs, praising God for saving them.
Israel also remembered the plagues in Egypt, how the land gave gnats, the river gave frogs, and strange things happened everywhere. Later in the desert, quails flew in from the sea to feed the hungry people. These were more signs that God was always providing and protecting.
The Egyptians who drowned were punished because they had treated Israel terribly. They had welcomed Israel to their land, used them as slaves, and mistreated foreigners. Even their blindness at the end was like what happened to the men at Sodom. The chapter closes with a summary: in every way, at every time and place, God exalted and helped his people. He never abandoned them.
Historical Context
This final chapter of Wisdom of Solomon brings together the whole story of the Exodus, the escape from Egypt, the crossing of the Red Sea, the quails in the desert, and the plagues. The writer lived around 100–50 BC and was writing for Jewish people in Alexandria, Egypt.
He wanted to end the book on a high note: God is faithful. From start to finish, the Exodus proved that God watches over his people. The reference to Sodom (verse 17) connects Egypt's sin of mistreating strangers to other wicked cities in the Bible that faced God's judgment.
