Azariah
Azariah, the chief priest from the family of Zadok, served during the reign of King Hezekiah (2 Chr 31:10, 13).
Biography
Azariah the chief priest, a descendant of Zadok, served as the highest religious authority in Judah during the transformative reign of King Hezekiah. When Hezekiah reinstituted the tithe and the regular offerings, the people responded with such abundance that the storerooms of the temple overflowed. It was Azariah who reported to the king that since the people began bringing their contributions, they had more than enough to eat and a great amount left over (2 Chr 31:10). Hezekiah then instructed him to oversee the preparation of storerooms and the appointment of administrators to manage the surplus. Azariah also served as chief overseer of the distributions among the priests and Levites (2 Chr 31:13), ensuring proper administration of the people's offerings.
Significance
Azariah the Zadokite chief priest stands as a witness to the abundant blessing that follows national covenant renewal. His report of overflowing storerooms (2 Chr 31:10) echoes the Mosaic promise that obedience to God produces material and spiritual overflow (Deut 28:1–14). As a descendant of Zadok, the priestly line that remained faithful through the Solomonic era, he embodied the continuity of legitimate priestly service. His role in managing the surplus offerings also points to the importance of faithful administration in sustaining communal worship. Hezekiah's reformation and Azariah's priesthood together serve as a high-water mark of covenant fidelity in the later monarchy period.
