Azaziah
Azaziah was a Levite during the reign of King Hezekiah, appointed to oversee the freewill offerings (2 Chr 31:13).
Biography
Azaziah was a Levite serving in the temple administration during King Hezekiah's revival in Judah (late 8th century BC). As part of Hezekiah's sweeping religious reforms, the king reinstituted the bringing of tithes and freewill offerings to the temple after years of neglect. The response from the people was so generous that additional Levitical administrators were needed to manage the overflow of contributions. Azaziah was among those appointed to oversee the freewill offerings (2 Chr 31:13), working under the chief steward Conaniah and his brother Shimei in organizing and distributing the gifts faithfully to the priests and Levites according to their divisions. His administrative service ensured that Hezekiah's restoration of temple worship was sustained not just ceremonially but practically.
Significance
Azaziah the Levite administrator embodies the principle that material stewardship is itself a sacred vocation. His appointment to oversee the freewill offerings during Hezekiah's revival represents a critical support function: without faithful distribution of the people's gifts, the priests and Levites would have been unable to sustain their service at the temple. His role reflects the biblical vision of a worshipping community that requires not only priests and prophets but also administrators of integrity. The abundance that required Azaziah's appointment was itself a sign of divine blessing (2 Chr 31:10), and his faithful service within that abundance helped channel it into ongoing covenant faithfulness. Every ministry of practical service in God's house carries this dignity.
