Dedan
Dedan was a grandson of Cush and a son of Raamah. (Gen.10.7; 1Ch.1.9)
Biography
Dedan was a son of Raamah and grandson of Cush, recorded in the Table of Nations in Genesis 10:7 and its parallel in 1 Chronicles 1:9. As a descendant of Ham through Cush, Dedan belonged to the genealogical branch associated with the peoples of northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The name Dedan corresponds to a well-known ancient trading settlement in northwestern Arabia, and this biblical Dedan is traditionally regarded as the eponymous ancestor of that people and place. The region of Dedan appears in later prophetic texts, particularly in Jeremiah and Ezekiel, as a trading hub associated with caravans and commerce, suggesting that the geographical identity of the settlement was closely tied to the genealogical figure.
Significance
Dedan son of Raamah illustrates the Table of Nations' foundational theological claim: that all the peoples of the earth are ultimately one human family, descended from Noah through his sons. By including figures like Dedan within this genealogy, Genesis asserts both human unity and the diversity of nations as part of God's creative ordering. Prophetically, the land of Dedan appears in Ezekiel 27:15, 20 and Jeremiah 49:8 in contexts of commerce and judgment, suggesting that the nations descended from this line were known and accountable to the God of Israel. Dedan's placement in the genealogy anticipates the biblical vision of all nations ultimately coming under God's sovereign rule.
