Hezir
Hezir was one of the priests who sealed the covenant with Nehemiah to follow the Law of God.
Biography
Hezir was a priest who appears in Nehemiah 10:20 among the signatories of the solemn covenant renewed under Nehemiah's leadership following the return from Babylonian exile. This document, recorded in Nehemiah 9–10, represented a corporate act of recommitment in which priests, Levites, and lay leaders pledged to observe the Mosaic Law, honor the Sabbath, refrain from intermarriage with surrounding peoples, and support the temple and its worship. Hezir's presence among the signatories indicates he held a recognized position within the post-exilic priestly community. Though little else is recorded about him individually, his act of sealing the covenant places him within a pivotal moment of Israel's spiritual restoration after the devastation of the Babylonian captivity.
Significance
Hezir's inclusion among the covenant signatories in Nehemiah 10 reflects the theological theme of communal covenant renewal central to the Exile and Return period. His participation illustrates that faithfulness to God's law was not merely an individual matter but a corporate vow made by the entire reconstituted community of Israel. This moment echoes covenantal renewals throughout the Old Testament, at Sinai, in the time of Joshua, and under King Josiah. Hezir's act, though modest in historical record, embodies the priestly calling to guard and transmit the sacred traditions of Israel across generations, and stands as a model of institutional faithfulness in times of communal rebuilding.
