Mary
Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, sat at Jesus' feet and anointed Him with perfume (Luk.10.39,42; Jhn.11; 12.3).
Biography
Mary of Bethany was a devoted follower of Jesus and the sister of Martha and Lazarus, residents of the village of Bethany near Jerusalem. She is remembered for her contemplative spirit, choosing to sit at the Lord's feet and listen to His teaching while her sister Martha busied herself with domestic duties (Luke 10:39-42). Jesus commended Mary's choice, declaring she had chosen "the better part." Following the death and miraculous raising of her brother Lazarus (John 11), Mary demonstrated extraordinary devotion by anointing Jesus' feet with an expensive perfume of pure nard worth a year's wages, wiping them with her hair (John 12:3). This extravagant act of worship foreshadowed Jesus' burial and became a memorial spoken of wherever the gospel is preached.
Significance
Mary of Bethany embodies the priority of spiritual devotion over mere activity in the Christian life. Her posture at Jesus' feet established a paradigm for discipleship that transcends cultural expectations, particularly remarkable in a first-century context where women were rarely afforded the role of student. Her anointing of Jesus carries profound theological weight: it anticipates His sacrificial death, demonstrates the costliness of true worship, and reveals an intuitive understanding of Christ's mission that eluded even the Twelve. Jesus' defense of her actions against Judas' criticism (John 12:4-8) underscores that extravagant love directed toward the Savior is never wasted.
