Palti
Palti (Paltiel), son of Laish, was Michal's husband from Gallim before she was taken back by David.
Biography
Palti, also known as Paltiel, was the son of Laish from the town of Gallim. After David fled from Saul's court, the king gave his daughter Michal, David's first wife, to Palti in marriage (1 Samuel 25:44). This political maneuver was designed to sever the dynastic legitimacy that David's marriage to a royal daughter conferred. Palti lived with Michal for several years during the turbulent period of David's exile. When David later consolidated power and negotiated with Abner to reunite the kingdom, he demanded Michal's return as a condition. The poignant scene in 2 Samuel 3:15-16 describes Palti following Michal, weeping as he walked behind her all the way to Bahurim, where Abner commanded him to turn back. His grief reveals a man of genuine emotional depth caught in the machinations of royal politics.
Significance
Palti's story illuminates the human cost of political power struggles in ancient Israel. His tearful farewell to Michal is one of Scripture's most emotionally raw moments, depicting a man who clearly loved his wife but was powerless against the claims of kings. Theologically, his narrative sits within the broader theme of David's divinely ordained rise to the throne, where personal relationships were often subordinated to covenantal purposes. Palti represents the innocent bystanders of salvation history, those whose lives are reshaped by God's sovereign plan without their choosing. His weeping walk to Bahurim stands as a testament to the real suffering that accompanies the unfolding of God's redemptive purposes.
