Shobab
Shobab was a son of Caleb and his wife Azubah.
Biography
Shobab was a son of Caleb ben Hezron of the tribe of Judah and his wife Azubah, mentioned in 1 Chronicles 2:18. He appears in the genealogical lists of Judah alongside his brothers Jesher and Ardon, situating him in the extended lineage that connects the patriarchal era to subsequent generations of Judahite clans. Caleb, his father, is a figure of considerable prominence in the Judahite line, closely related to the Caleb of the spy narrative (Numbers 13-14), though the precise genealogical relationship between these figures is a matter of scholarly discussion. Shobab himself receives no individual narrative, but his enumeration in the Chronicler's genealogy signals the continuation of Caleb's line within the broader context of Judah's clan history.
Significance
Shobab's place in the Judahite genealogy of 1 Chronicles 2 reflects the Chronicler's overarching theological agenda of tracing the continuity of God's covenant purposes through the tribe of Judah, the tribe from which the Davidic dynasty and ultimately the Messiah would emerge. The meticulous recording of clan names, even those without dramatic individual stories, testifies to the biblical conviction that God's redemptive plan is worked out through specific families over generations. Shobab thus represents the anonymous but indispensable links in a genealogical chain that ultimately reaches its fulfillment in the promised royal line of David and beyond him in Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:3).
